Welcome

Poor old Gilbert is getting restless. Despite the fact that there is more interest in wildlife than ever before, it seems that most of the so-called conservation organisations are losing interest in species. Instead they prefer to babble on about landscape scale conservation and ecosystem services (whatever they are). Could this be because most of their staff don't have any knowledge about species if they don't have four legs?
This is my attempt to encourage an interest in good old-fashioned natural history.

The Legs

It's been an awful long time since I last wrote anything here. Last year was ridiculously busy but hopefully this year will be calmer and I'll find time to post more often.

A tedious morning staring down the microscope at the genitalia of some rather boring moths was enlivened by news of a Greater Yellowlegs at Titchfield Haven. I have seen 'Greaterlegs' in six countries but not in Britain and it was only about 10 miles from home so I should be able to get there before the crowds.

The bird was fairly distant, good enough through the scope but way beyond my camera so here is a photo courtesy of Wikipedia Commons.

If you go, be sure to wear wellies as the path along the canal is a mud bath.
